Let’s face it, we have all hit that “Quick Wash” button. It’s fast; it’s easy and it gets you out of a bind. But, if you want to lower your energy bills, and help the environment, it may be time to rethink your laundry habits, and dishwasher habits.
What’s the Deal with Eco Wash Programs?
Eco wash options on washing machines and dishwashers are designed to save energy and water. They are generally designed to:
- Use lower water temperatures
- Use longer wash cycles, to deal with low heat
- Reduce water and electricity overall
You may think that longer cycles use more energy, when in fact it is often the opposite. The energy taken to heat the water accounts for most the energy taken during a wash cycle. By lowering the temperature and giving more time eco modes can be much more efficient than quick wash.
The Savings Stack Up
Switching from a quick wash to an eco-program can save you more than a few pennies. Energy usage estimates consider using eco settings saves you about £47 a year. That is based on the average cost of electricity at 30p/kWh. Maybe £47 does not sound like a lot to you, but when you scale it up over the life of your appliance, or across multiple appliances, those savings start to add up.
Small Change, Big Difference.
In addition to the savings being good for your wallet, using an eco-mode means you are reducing your impact on the environment. Reduced energy means less carbon emissions, reduced water means we are conserving one of our most finite and valuable resources.
When to Use Quick Wash (If You Even Do)
There is nothing wrong with using quick wash (having an appliance which can do a quick wash is actually handy) if you are running out of time, or you feel you need to freshen up lightly soiled clothes. However, for most regular loads, particularly if they are heavy or dirty, go for the eco-program setting. The eco setting is better for your wallet, and the planet.
Tip: Look at the appliance manual for specific minimal washing instructions, as some appliances even allow the customisation of eco-mode settings to find your best balance between efficiency and performance.
The next time you go to use a quick wash cycle, stop and think long term. Eco wash may seem slower, but your wallet (and the planet) will thank you.
